Masuichi drew the pictures for a four volume, woodblock-printed picture book entitled Tansai Gafu (i.e., Monochrome Picture Album) which was published in 1934. Thirty-five pictures of flowers and (or) birds that were included in volumes 2-4 are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Masuichi’s artistic style is difficult to categorize because he drew the shapes of some objects semi-accurately (most plants) and others accurately (birds and animals). In addition, he colored some objects accurately (birds and animals) while others (most plants) were given monochromatic coloration. As a result, his pictures are unique in Japanese flower-bird art.
